Small Business Authenticity

Every small business faces the challenge of appearing legitimate to customers. So many are fighting for attention AND many online advertisers don’t know how to target only their local customers. The content of searches on the internet is confusing and social media networks struggle to differentiate local and applicable from the rest.

As a business owner – you can improve your odds by sharing localized context. An example of this is citing neighborhoods, streets, and local leaders in posts, comments, and ads. If you read an ad that says, “We can redo your roof and we are in your neighborhood, ” it doesn’t exactly convey credibility.

But if you read an ad that is specific to you, “The 1970’s home in northern Ferguson wanted to update their aging roof. One of our team members had lived in this neighborhood and referred the couple to us….”

This is more legitimate.

Tell a story – cite local details, provide context that conveys reality. Ask another person to read it to ensure you didn’t share personal information or overhype it (that looks fake).

People love buying from locals – they feel civic pride and more trust when they do.
